Explorers’ League Editor Jeff Clark: Bonjour, Andre. Welcome to our Explorers’ League! We’re glad you’ve joined us.
Andre Gaumond: Bonjour, Jeff. I’m extremely pleased you chose me. You guys are superstars in the industry.
Jeff: Thank you. Let’s start with what I understand is an interesting story about your attraction to geology.
As a geological engineer with a master’s degree in geological economics, André Gaumond has worked for several organizations and the government of Quebec.
From 1987 to 1992, he was a mining analyst for financial institutions and a technical and financial adviser within different mining exploration companies.
Mr. Gaumond reorganized Virginia Gold Mines in 1992 and became president of the company. On behalf of Virginia’s team, he accepted the Quebec Prospector of the Year award in 1996-1997 for the company’s work in James Bay, and the Prix Ressource from the Quebec Order of Geologists in 2001.
In 2004, Virginia was again awarded the title of Quebec Prospector of the Year in recognition of the Coulon and Éléonore projects. André received the title of Quebec Entrepreneur of the Year in 2005 for his achievement on the Éléonore project, as well as was named “Mining Man of the Year” in Canada by famous mining magazine “The Northern Miner.” In 2006, he was given the prestigious Canadian Prospector of the Year award from the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC).
André was awarded the e3 (Environmental Excellence in Exploration) award in Quebec in 2007 and in Canada in 2008 for its implication in the creation of the Nunavik Restor-Action Funds. He received the Career award Summa 2009 awarded by La Faculté des Sciences et de Génie from Université Laval.
He sits on the Board of the PDAC and Detour Gold. André is a member of several professional associations, among them the Quebec Order of Engineers.
