To manage your investments you can, of course, choose to “go it alone”… or to listen to your commission-based broker or RIA… or even the proverbial brother-in-law. Those sources of information may be of some use. But if you are looking for a systematic, always-there, ongoing source of serious research and analysis on today’s top investments, you owe it to yourself to take us up on our standard 3-month money-back guaranteed trial subscriptions to see just how useful Casey Research can be in your investment planning.

Learn more about Casey Research.
The genesis of Casey Research began with Doug Casey’s best-selling book, Crisis Investing (1979). Due to demand from readers of that classic, Doug Casey began publishing a newsletter, originally called Investing In Crisis, that has evolved over time into today’s Casey Research, a global research organization with over 40 employees located around the world.
It will be easier to describe what types of stocks we don’t cover. Typically, we don’t cover stocks that you might read about in Money Magazine or see discussed on CNBC. That’s because by the time a company is discussed in the mainstream financial media, invariably all the upside is already out of it.

Instead, we tend to focus on out-of-favor, or under-the-radar issues that, based on our research, still offer extraordinary upside. Current areas of focus include small cap energy and mineral exploration companies. And, we also have been actively recommending a fairly long list of ETFs that our research shows are now on the right side of the current economic turmoil... for instance, inverse interest rate and various commodity ETFs.

For some time now we have also have been focusing on short-selling the stocks of large-cap financials, banks and other institutions that have been caught on the wrong side of the unfolding credit crisis.

Remember, unlike research organizations affiliated with brokerage houses, or even magazines and web sites that rely on advertisers for the majority of their revenues, Casey Research is almost entirely reliant on subscription revenues. You can take comfort that our recommendations are entirely unbiased and will change over time to stay in sync with the broader trends.

Learn more about Casey's investing philosophy.
Doug Casey is a highly respected author, publisher and professional investor who graduated from Georgetown University in 1968.

Doug literally wrote the book on profiting from periods of economic turmoil: his book “Crisis Investing” spent multiple weeks as #1 on the New York Times bestseller list and became the best-selling financial book of 1980 with 438,640 copies sold; surpassing big-caliber names, like “Free to Choose” by Milton Friedman, “The Real War” by Richard Nixon, and “Cosmos” by Carl Sagan.

Then Doug broke the record with his next book, "Strategic Investing", by receiving the largest advance ever paid for a financial book at the time.

Widely recognized for his skills in identifying high-return opportunities in precious metals and energy, he has been a featured guest on hundreds of radio and TV shows, including David Letterman, Merv Griffin, Charlie Rose, Phil Donahue, Regis Philbin, Maury Povich, NBC News, National Public Radio's popular Marketplace program and CNN; and has been the topic of numerous features in periodicals such as Time, Forbes, People, New York Times Sunday Magazine and the Washington Post.

For over a quarter century, Doug has written a newsletter and alert service for sophisticated investors and has been in demand as a featured speaker by conferences around the world.

Through its subscription-supported publications and web sites, each month Casey Research, LLC. serves the information needs of hundreds of thousands of self-directed investors interested in natural resources.

Doug, who also authored the best-selling International Man (which, interestingly enough, was the most sold book in the history of Rhodesia) lives the life described in that book by dividing his time between homes in Aspen, Colorado, Auckland, New Zealand and Salta, Argentina.

In his quest for exceptional investments, he travels around the globe (over 175 countries to date) to kick the rocks on mine sites and evaluate countries for possible real estate speculations. In 2005 alone, he traveled to Argentina, Colombia, Bulgaria, Dubai... and even Syria (where, despite the risk, there are some very prospective oil and gas initiatives underway).

Alert Services

For most investors, one of our monthly services should provide you with the information you need to effectively manage your portfolio, as well as one or two great new ways to profit each month.

On the other hand, if you are a high net-worth individual with the ability and willingness to move quickly on early-stage or fast moving opportunities, then you should consider signing up for one of our Alert services. These services are not published on a fixed schedule, but only when our research team uncovers a special situation that requires quick action, or which is so thinly traded or so early stage – including companies offering private placements or pre-IPO financings - that only a relative handful of investors can get positioned.

While earlier stage companies can carry a higher degree of risk, and so therefore are not for everyone, for active investors with the net worth that allows for speculation, the Alert services can offer exceptional returns.
The Alert services focus on very early stage and often thinly traded companies -- or even private placements with extremely limited availability. As such, we are forced to cap the total number of subscribers allowed requiring a higher subscription fee to off-set the considerable research costs associated with uncovering the extraordinary opportunities covered by the Alert services.
Our premium Alert services (Casey Investment Alert and Casey Energy Confidential) often include recommendations for companies that are very early-stage, and therefore have a very small market capitalization. Exposing too many subscribers to the recommendation at the same time can drive the shares much higher, turning an opportunity into a hazard.

In addition, on occasion our research team uncovers opportunities for Alert subscribers to participate in highly sought-after private placement financings – but these are typically very limited in availability. The bottom line is that the nature of the Alert services simply wouldn’t work with an open-ended, much larger circulation base.

As a result, we limit the number of subscriptions to the Alert services, and once those limits are reached, we close the Alerts to new subscriptions. If/when subscriptions become available we will temporarily re-open them until the space is filled again.
There is no set publication schedule for the Casey Alert services (Casey Investment Alert, Casey Energy Confidential). Subscribers are notified real-time whenever new information and breaking news becomes available.
Our alert services focus on very early stage and often thinly traded companies -- or even private placements which are prone to higher risk, but when successful, result in much higher returns.

With limited availability of such investments we are forced to cap the total number of subscribers allowed, thus making these premium, limited-availability services.

Questions About Investing and Risk

Do-it-yourself transport of gold across international boundaries is problematical. The hazards begin with TSA and US Customs. With TSA, presenting anything unusual can lead to a bad result. If TSA then introduces you to a Customs employee, you may be dealing with an individual with an incorrect but expansive sense of what is eligible for seizure as an improperly undeclared financial instrument. Even if you don't lose the gold, you could miss your flight. If those cautions aren't enough to dissuade you, a non-stop flight to Switzerland would be the wisest way to execute an unwise plan. Switzerland is a safe place, and there are no duties or other barriers to bringing in gold. However, getting to Switzerland doesn't get your gold into a Swiss bank. There is no Swiss bank that will accept business from an American who walks in off the street. You could, however, take the train to Vienna and rent a safe deposit box at Das Safe.
Few non-US financial institutions will any longer accept an account from a US person. However, there are a good number that will do business with an offshore company or offshore trust even though it is beneficially owned by an American. You could, for example, set up a Cook Islands trust or LLC that would open an account with a bank in Zurich, where you could trade stocks, bonds, currencies and metals. Canada, on the other hand can be difficult. Some Canadian brokers will accept an account from an offshore entity tied to a US person, but they won't accept trading instructions from an individual physically located in the US.
There is no list. Each bank has its own policy, those policies change, and the way a bank's policy is administered can depend on the bank employee you are talking to. Bring your passport and a utility bill linking your name to a physical address, and you probably will get a proper welcome.
There can be no guarantees, but Casey Research has an exceptional track record of spotting powerful trends and ways to profit from those trends. Because we don’t follow securities that are typically covered by the mainstream financial media, the upside can be far more attractive. Or, put another way, “when everyone knows something about an investment, there’s nothing left to know”. Instead, we’ll help you get positioned in investments with big upside… and do the work necessary to eliminate much of the risk. On that topic, we also have an excellent track record of helping our subscribers avoid broad portfolio risk by, for example, steering them away from the housing sector, financials and banks over the last year.
Risk is a matter of timing. Most traditional investment advisors would have told you that gold was a risky investment in 2001, or that oil was too risky in 2004… and then told you to invest in financials in January of 2008 because “the worst was over”, causing you to miss big opportunities or take big losses.

At Casey Research we understand the nature of risk and reward. Which is to say, we recognize that to earn exceptional returns you need to take risks… but then we do our best to eliminate the risk through careful research, leaving the upside intact.

As per the examples above, often times the best time to buy a sector is when it is deeply out of favor, despite favorable fundamentals.

You can follow the herd, and get sheepish returns… or let us help you gain a clear-eyed perspective that can produce truly life-changing profits.

To understand the difference, start with the Casey publication (or two) that most interests you, then follow our recommendations without making an investment for several months to get a better feeling for the caliber of our research.

Our three month money back guarantee means you can do so with absolutely no risk. That’s the single best way to understand the Casey Research difference.
Unfortunately, regulatory concerns make it impossible for us to provide you with investment advice, or to discuss specific securities recommendations outside of what's included in our publications and posted on our website. Giving you an individualized response would likely qualify us as an “investment adviser” and draw us into a regulatory thicket we don’t wish to enter. And, of course, we don’t know the details of your financial circumstances - information a good advisor would want to weigh before providing you with guidance about specific securities.

To get individualized advice, we suggest that you contact a broker who is knowledgeable and experienced in the resource sector and who is familiar with the kinds of stocks we write about at Casey Research.

Information about choosing the right broker for your needs, along with specific recommendations, is available on our website. You do not need to be a subscriber to access this information.
You can browse our Resource Dictionary for hundreds of terms Casey Research uses every day in publications. Click here to access the Resource Dictionary
